Sedation Dentistry in Regina

Types of Sedation Offered at Regina Lakeview Dental

We offer various types of sedation such as mild oral sedation, IV sedation and nitrous oxide sedation depending on your and treatment needs.

After your appointment

Because you may feel drowsy for the remainder of the day, you must be accompanied by a responsible adult and cannot drive yourself home. Do not operate a motor vehicle or hazardous machinery for at least 18 hours following the procedure.

Oral Mild Sedation

For patients who benefit from deeper relaxation, we offer oral minimal sedation to ensure a calm and comfortable dental experience.

Preparing for your visit

  • Medication: Your dentist may prescribe Lorazepam (Ativan), a type of benzodiazepine, to be taken orally as instructed.
  • Timing: The medication starts to work in about 20 – 30 minutes, with the full effect occurring 1 – 1.5 hours after taking it.
  • Fasting: Please do not eat or drink for 2 hours prior to your appointment.
  • Comfort: We recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing.
  • Details: Please do not wear nail polish to your appointment.
  • Health updates: It is important to report any health changes or current medications to your dentist before the procedure.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide (commonly called laughing gas) is a safe and effective way to help both children and adults feel more relaxed during dental visits. It is a blend of oxygen and nitrous oxide that you breathe in through a small mask.

What to expect

  • A calming effect: When inhaled, the gas is absorbed by the body to help reduce fear and apprehension.
  • Sweet aroma: You or your child will smell a sweet, pleasant aroma and experience a sense of wellbeing.
  • Fully conscious: You remain awake, keep all natural reflexes, and can respond to directions throughout the procedure.
  • Gentle sensations: Common temporary side effects include a lightweight or floating sensation.
  • Tingling feelings: Some patients may experience tingling in their fingers, toes, cheeks, or lips.
  • Quick recovery: Normal breathing naturally eliminates nitrous oxide from your body once the mask is removed.

IV Sedation

IV sedation is an effective option for patients who wish to feel as though they have slept through their dental procedure. This method involves providing medication intravenously while your vital signs are closely monitored.

What to expect

  • Deep relaxation: We use Midazolam (Versed), a medication designed to ease anxiety and cause temporary amnesia.
  • Safety and monitoring: Throughout the process, your heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen levels are closely monitored.
  • Level of consciousness: You will remain awake and breathing on your own, sedated to a point where you are calm but still able to protect your airway.
  • Comfort: The goal is for you to feel like you slept through the visit, though you may remember small parts of the procedure.
  • Local anesthetic: Your dentist will still use freezing if it is necessary for your specific dental work.
