Partial Dentures
Partial dentures are a removable prosthetic option designed to replace specific missing teeth in your smile.
Adjusting to your partial denture:
- Speaking: You will likely notice short-term changes to your speech as you adapt to the prosthetic
- Saliva: It is common to experience a temporary increase in saliva production.
- Fit and comfort: While we take every step to create the best fit, most partials will require minor adjustments.
- Tooth preparation: At times, we may prepare “rest seats” on your remaining teeth to help with the support and fit of the denture.
- Maintenance: To ensure the best outcome, it is essential to follow a strict personal oral hygiene routine, including daily brushing and flossing.
When is A Complete Denture Recommended
A complete denture is a treatment option available to you when all the teeth in one arch are missing or have to be extracted.
What Happens with This Procedure?
Fabrication of a complete denture typically takes 3-5 appointments in which either intra-oral scans or impressions will be utilized to ensure the best fit, function, and esthetics of your denture. You can also anticipate one or more follow-up visits to make adjustments to the fit of your denture.
What are my Other Treatment Options?
- No Treatment
- Implant Supported or Retained Dentures
What are the risks of treatment?
Like all dental procedures, fabrication of a denture comes with some level of risk. When you choose to have this treatment, you are consenting to the following risks:
Dentures not fitting well
- Steps are taken to help create the best fit for the prosthetic; however, some patients are unable to accommodate the prosthetic or find it looser than they expected.
- Even the best fitting dentures will routinely get food underneath them
Change in Speaking
- There will be short term changes to speaking. The long-term effect varies from person-to-person.
- Accompanying the change in speaking there will be an increased amount of saliva production. It is difficult to predict how long this will last.
-
Failure of Dentures
- Some people are unable to accommodate a denture.
- The denture can fracture. The laboratory will cover any acrylic fracture for 6 months if the repair is completed in our office.
-
Adjustments
- Almost all complete dentures will require some adjustments. These adjustments are done for no-charge at our office for the first 3 months.
Expectations
- Dentures are a replacement for no teeth; they are not a replacement for teeth. Dentures will never come close to replacing the function that you have with a full set of teeth.
- Your chewing function will be about 10% of what can be expected with a full set of teeth.
Reline
- In cases where a denture is delivered right after extractions, it is anticipated that you will require a reline in 6-9 months. The fee for this is not included in the original denture fee.
- You can anticipate needing to reline your denture every 3-5 years
