Dental Implants in Regina

When is a Dental Implant Indicated?

Your dentist may recommend a dental implant as a treatment to assist with the replacement of one or more teeth. Dental implants can help to retain a single crown, or an implant supported bridge or dentures if you are missing more than one tooth.

What Happens with This Procedure?

After administering local anesthetic, your dentist will use a series of instruments to prepare an osteotomy (small hole in the jawbone) where the implant will be placed. The implant, which is fabricated from medical grade titanium, is then placed in the osteotomy. You may have a bone graft placed concurrently with the implant to help correct any defects or voids in the surrounding bone. The surgical area will then typically have one or more sutures placed and you will be given strict after-care instructions. We will see you back ten days after the implant is placed to remove the suture(s).

Any discomfort from the placement of a dental implant is typically less than the discomfort felt following an extraction. The healing period for a dental implant varies between typically eight to twenty weeks. After the healing period is complete you can have your implant restored with the predetermined prosthetic. If you were patient of our office prior to having the implant paced, we will restore the implant, however, if you have been referred to our office for the implant surgery, you will likely return to their care for the restoration.

What are my Other Treatment Options?

  • No Treatment
  • Dentures (Partial or Complete)
  • Tooth Supported Bridge (In some situations)

What are the risks of treatment?

Like all dental procedures, extractions come with some level of risk. When you choose to have one or more extractions you are consenting to the following risks:

  • You can anticipate post-operative pain. We will discuss ways to manage this pain, but even with good pain management, you can anticipate some level of discomfort.
  • Swelling
  • Post-operative infection that could require further treatment or medication.
  • Loss of bone or soft tissue.
  • Restricted jaw opening for several days.
  • Injury to nerves which may cause pain, numbness, or tingling.
  • Opening and infection of the sinus cavity (upper teeth only)
  • The implant can fail to integrate meaning it will be unable to support a crown or denture and will need to be replaced.
