Partial Denture in Regina
When is A Removable Partial Denture Recommended
A removable partial denture may be recommended when you are missing one or more teeth. The partial denture may be fabricated from all acrylic or a combination of acrylic and metal. The type of material recommended will depend on a variety of factors that you can discuss with your dentist.
What Happens With This Procedure?
Fabrication of a removable partial denture typically takes 2-5 appointments in which either digital scans or impressions will be utilized to ensure the best fit, function, and esthetics of your partial denture. You can also anticipate one or more follow-up visits to make adjustments to the fit of your partial denture. Prior to fabricating a partial denture your dentist will likely take radiographs (x-rays) of your remaining teeth and complete a full examination.
What are my Other Treatment Options?
No Treatment
- Implant treatment options
- Tooth Supported Bridge
What are the risks of treatment?
Like all dental procedures, fabrication of a removable partial denture comes with some level of risk. When you choose to have this treatment you are consenting to the following risks:Partial Dentures not fitting well
- Steps are taken to create the best fit for the removable prosthetic, however some patients are unable to accommodate the prosthetic or always find that it seems looser than they expected.
- Even the best fitting partial dentures will get food underneath them on a routine basis.
Change in Speaking
- There will definitely be short term changes to speaking. The long-term effect varies from person-to-person.
- Accompanying the change in speaking there will be a temporary increase in the amount of saliva production.
Failure of Dentures
- Some people are unable to accommodate a denture.
- The denture can fracture. The laboratory will cover any acrylic fracture for 6 months if the repair is completed in our office.
Adjustments
Most partial dentures will require some adjustments. These adjustments are done for no-charge at our office for the first 3 months.
Expectations
Partial dentures are a replacement for missing teeth. Dentures will never entirely replace the function that you had with a full set of teeth.
Reline
- In cases where a partial denture is delivered right after extractions, it is anticipated that you will require a permanent reline in 6-9 months. The fee for this is not included in the original denture fee.
- You can anticipate needing to reline your denture every 3-5 years
Preparation of Teeth
At times we will prepare rest seats or guide planes on your remaining teeth to help with the fit and support of your partial denture. This will not increase your risk of cavities but can cause some tooth sensitivity.
How do I take care of my Partial Denture?
Take your denture(s) out and rinse them well after eating. Rinse your denture(s) with tap water in the sink. They can be slippery! Placing a towel on the counter or under the sink can be a good idea to prevent them from breaking if dropped.
Clean your mouth after removing the denture(s). Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and floss to clean your natural teeth and/or implants. Use the same soft bristle toothbrush to clean your tongue, gums and the roof of your mouth. Ensure you remove any denture adhesive that is still on your gums, as this can cause poor fit of the denture(s).
Brush your denture(s) at least once a day. Take out your denture(s) and gently brush them with a denture brush and mild soap or denture cleaner. This helps get rid of food and plaque accumulating on the denture.
Take your denture(s) out and store dry overnight. This allows the oral tissue to breath and prevents the growth of bacteria and fungus.
Soak denture in a denture cleaning solution. This can be done daily, however with proper maintenance it is likely only required once every few days. Ensure to thoroughly rinse denture after using these solutions. An example of a denture cleaning solution is: Polident 3-minute Denture Cleaner Tablets.
Things to avoid:
Abrasive cleaning materials. Hard-bristle toothbrushes, harsh soaps and toothpastes are too abrasive and can cause scratches and damage to your denture(s).
Products with bleach and alcohol. Bleach can weaken denture(s) and changed their colour.
Products with chlorine. Chlorine can tarnish and wear metal on metal partial dentures.
Hot water. Don’t soak your dentures in hot or boiling water, as it may cause your dentures to change shape.
